Dave Hammerman MBOA Past President and Honorary Member Passed Away

May 22, 2017

Dave Hammerman
All,

I am greatly saddened to report that Dave Hammerman passed away earlier this evening at Gilchrest Hospice Care in Towson, MD after a long battle with cancer.  He is survived by his loving wife Rita, son Joel, daughters Mindy and Nicky and several grandchildren.  I believe Dave was 81.

Dave was one of the first four graduates of the University of Maryland's Department of Fire Protection Engineering in June 1962.  After graduation, he worked as a Fire Protection Engineer with Industrial Risk Insurers providing consulting services for highly protected industrial facilities.  In 1966 he was hired by Maryland State Fire Marshal James C. "Robbie" Robertson as the first Fire Protection Engineer for the State Fire Marshal's Office.  In 1971 he was appointed the Chief Fire Protection Engineer as the engineering staff began to grow.  In 1980 Dave accepted a position as Director of Codes Administration with the Department of Economic and Community Development.  After over a decade in this position he accepted a position as Director of the Department of Inspection, Licensing & Permits for Howard County Government until he retired several years ago.  After retirement, he worked as a part-time consulting fire protection engineer with Marshall Klein & Associates until just a few weeks ago.

Dave was a Fellow of the International Society of Fire Protection Engineers, a Past President of the Chesapeake Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, a Life Member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), a Past President and Honorary Member of the Maryland Building Officials Association, a member of the International Code Council (ICC) and served on numerous NFPA and ICC Technical Committees.  A more complete listing of his many associations and accomplishments will be forthcoming.

Most importantly, Dave was a dear friend, mentor and colleague to many of us and his personal commitment and contributions to the field of fire safety and fire protection engineering will be well remembered.

At this time I understand arrangements are pending for this Tuesday through Sol Levinson & Bros., Inc. Funeral Home, 8900 Reisterstown Rd., Pikesville, MD.

Please keep Dave and his loving family in your thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.  Thank you!    John Bender
